๐Ÿšจ Public Advisory: Increased Rattlesnake Sightings in Hancock, NY & PA๐Ÿšจ

Issued: July 21, 2025

Due to recent high heat and a saturated water table, the Hancock region and surrounding areas are experiencing an unusual increase in timber rattlesnake activity. Local residents and hikers have reported multiple sightingsโ€”some near homes, porches, and public trails.

๐Ÿ What You Need to Know

  • Timber rattlesnakes are native to this region and are a protected species under NYS law.

  • The combination of flooded lowland dens and hot, dry surfaces has driven snakes to more visible and elevated areas.

  • Sightings are most common during late morning through late afternoon, when snakes bask in the sun.

โš ๏ธ Risks & Safety Tips

  • DO NOT attempt to handle, relocate, or kill a rattlesnake. They are not aggressive but will defend themselves if threatened.

  • If you see a rattlesnake:

    • Remain calm and back away slowly.

    • Keep children and pets at a safe distance.

    • Do not block its exit path.

  • Avoid stepping over logs, sitting on rocks, or reaching into brushy areas.
