🚨 Public Advisory: Increased Rattlesnake Sightings in Hancock, NY & PA🚨
Issued: July 21, 2025
Due to recent high heat and a saturated water table, the Hancock region and surrounding areas are experiencing an unusual increase in timber rattlesnake activity. Local residents and hikers have reported multiple sightings—some near homes, porches, and public trails.
🐍 What You Need to Know
Timber rattlesnakes are native to this region and are a protected species under NYS law.
The combination of flooded lowland dens and hot, dry surfaces has driven snakes to more visible and elevated areas.
Sightings are most common during late morning through late afternoon, when snakes bask in the sun.
⚠️ Risks & Safety Tips
DO NOT attempt to handle, relocate, or kill a rattlesnake. They are not aggressive but will defend themselves if threatened.
If you see a rattlesnake:
Remain calm and back away slowly.
Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
Do not block its exit path.
Avoid stepping over logs, sitting on rocks, or reaching into brushy areas.
