🚨 Important Update: Postponement of Hancock Fireman’s Field Days 🚨

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the postponement of the 2025 Hancock Fireman’s Field Days, originally scheduled for Friday, July 25th and Saturday, July 26th, out of respect for the recent and sudden passing of a beloved East Branch Assistant Chief Jason McGlone of our East Branch fire department.

In this time of mourning, we stand in solidarity with their department, their families, and all who are grieving. To honor his memory, our department will be attending the upcoming services this Saturday and offering our full support during this incredibly difficult time. As such, a new date for Field Days will be announced once determined. We are deeply grateful to everyone who generously contributed toward this year’s fireworks display — each donor will be contacted individually regarding next steps.

Please note:
🎟️ The raffle drawing will still take place on the originally scheduled date.

We appreciate your understanding, compassion, and continued support as our community comes together in grief and solidarity. Thank you for standing with us. ❤️ — The Hancock Volunteer Fire Department

🚨 Public Advisory: Increased Rattlesnake Sightings in Hancock, NY & PA 🚨 Issued: July 21, 2025

Due to recent high heat and a saturated water table, the Hancock region and surrounding areas are experiencing an unusual increase in timber rattlesnake activity. Local residents and hikers have reported multiple sightings—some near homes, porches, and public trails.

🐍 What You Need to Know
Timber rattlesnakes are native to this region and are a protected species under NYS law.

The combination of flooded lowland dens and hot, dry surfaces has driven snakes to more visible and elevated areas.

Sightings are most common during late morning through late afternoon, when snakes bask in the sun.

⚠️ Risks & Safety Tips
DO NOT attempt to handle, relocate, or kill a rattlesnake. They are not aggressive but will defend themselves if threatened.

If you see a rattlesnake:

-Remain calm and back away slowly.
-Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
-Do not block its exit path.
-Avoid stepping over logs, sitting on rocks, or reaching into brushy areas.

📞 Who to Call
If you spot a rattlesnake on or near your property or public space:

✅ Contact NYS DEC Wildlife Dispatch:
📍 Region 4 (Schoharie, Delaware County)
📞 (518) 357-2355
🌐 dec.ny.gov

✅ In Emergency Situations:
Call 911 and inform dispatch it’s a wildlife issue involving a protected species.

📍 Stay Aware. Stay Safe.
This advisory will remain in effect through mid-August, or until conditions change. Please share with friends, neighbors, and trail users in the area.

Jerry Vernold Champions Innovative Financing for UHS Delaware Valley Hospital Expansion!

HANCOCK, NY – Hancock Town Supervisor Jerry Vernold is taking action to secure the future of healthcare in our region. As a member of the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, Jerry Vernold recently voted in favor of creating the Delaware County Capital Resource Corporation (CRC)—a groundbreaking financing solution that will enable the $80.6 million expansion of UHS Delaware Valley Hospital. How does this benefit our community?
The CRC allows for tax-exempt financing, saving the hospital an estimated $20–30 million over the project’s lifetime, without any cost or liability to county taxpayers.

The new expansion will create a state-of-the-art, four-story “medical neighborhood,” offering comprehensive healthcare services right here in Delaware County. This means more specialized care, modern facilities, and improved healthcare outcomes—bringing vital services closer to families in Hancock and all surrounding communities.

Supervisor Vernold explains,

“Given the uncertainty of future federal support for rural healthcare, it is prudent to find alternate funding sources to meet the health care needs of our residents. This innovative approach protects taxpayers while ensuring our community has access to quality healthcare for generations to come.”

The Delaware Valley Hospital expansion is expected to deliver lasting benefits, strengthen local health services, and improve quality of life for everyone in our region. Follow this page for updates on project progress and new community initiatives.
